Isoflurane
Indications/Uses
Induction & maintenance of general anesth. Subanesth doses to provide analgesia in obstet & other painful procedures.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Induction Start w/ 0.5% v/v conc increased to 1.5-3% v/v given w/ O2 or O2 & nitrous oxide mixt. Maintenance 1-2.5% v/v conc w/ O2 & nitrous oxide mixt; 1.5-3.5% v/v conc if used only w/ O2. Anesth for cesarean section 0.5-0.75% v/v conc w/ oxygen & nitrous oxide.
Special Precautions
Breath holding, coughing & laryngospasm. Increased cerebrospinal pressure. Do not administer in patients w/ known or suspected susceptibility to malignant hyperthermia. Patients w/ raised intracranial pressure. Increased blood loss after curcuage or termination of pregnancy.
Adverse Reactions
Resp depression, hypotension, arrhythmias & malignant hyperthermia. Increased heart rate. Sensitises the myocardium to sympathomimetics. Shivering, nausea & vomiting in post-op.
