Mefenamic acid
Indications/Uses
Post-op, post extraction, postpartum pains; headache, dysmenorrhea, dental pain, traumatic pain & other painful musculoskeletal conditions eg, OA & RA, including pain & fever following inflammatory conditions.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Initially 500 mg then 250 mg every 6-8 hr. Childn 25 mg/kg/day in divided doses. Max: 7 days.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Take immediately after meals.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. GI ulceration.
Special Precautions
Patients w/ asthma, bronchospasm, bleeding disorders, CV disease, history of peptic ulceration, liver or renal failure; CHF, cirrhosis, diuretic-induced vol depletion, renal insufficiency. Not to be given w/ coumarin anticoagulants,  Not recommended w/ renal & hepatic impairment. Not recommended use in pregnancy. Childn <14 yr. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
GI disturbances including diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, & abdominal pain; peptic ulceration, GI bleeding, headache, drowsiness, dizziness, nervousness & visual disturbances; hypersensitivity reactions including skin rashes & urticaria; hemolytic anemia, agranulocytosis, pancytopenia, thrombocytopenia or thrombocytopenic purpura, & bone-marrow aplasia; renal failure, glomerulonephritis & papillary necrosis.
Drug Interactions
Coumarin anticoagulants.
