Each capsule contains: Cloxacillin (as sodium) 500 mg.
Cloxacillin is a semi-synthetic penicillin which is resistant to penicillinase and is active against Gram-positive organisms, particularly staphylococci, streptococci and pneumococci.
Pharmacology: Pharmacokinetics: Absorption and Fate: Cloxacillin Sodium is incompletely absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract after oral administration. It should be given at least 30 minutes before or at least two hours after meals as the presence of food in the stomach reduces absorption. Serum concentrations are enhanced if probenecid is given concomitantly.
Cloxacillin is used in the treatment of infections due to staphylococci which are resistant to benzylpenicillin. It is also used for mixed streptococcal and staphylococcal infections when the staphylococci are penicillin-resistant. Cloxacillin is sometimes given with ampicillin in infections due to beta-lactamase-producing Gram-negative organisms since it may inhibit the destruction or ampicillin.
Adult: 500 mg every 6 hours to be given at least 30 minutes before meals.
Or as prescribed by a physician.
Cloxacillin is contraindicated in patients known to be sensitive to penicillin. It should be given with caution to patients with known history of allergy to it. Care is necessary if very high doses of penicillin are given, especially if renal function is poor, because of the risk of nephrotoxicity.
Side effects are uncommon and mainly of a mild and transitory nature. Gastrointestinal upsets (e.g nausea, diarrhea) and skin rashes have been reported. If a skin rash occurs, treatment should be discontinued.
Probenecid prolongs the half-life of Cloxacillin.
Store at temperatures not exceeding 30°C.
J01CF02 - cloxacillin ; Belongs to the class of beta-lactamase resistant penicillins. Used in the systemic treatment of infections.
