Desmopressin acetate
Indications/Uses
Dosage/Direction for Use
Central diabetes insipidus Adult & childn 100-200 mcg tid. Primary nocturnal enuresis 200-400 mcg at bedtime. Symptomatic treatment of nocturia in adults associated w/ nocturnal polyuria 100-400 mcg at bedtime.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Habitual & psychogenic polydipsia. Cardiac insufficiency & other conditions requiring treatment w/ diuretics. Moderate to severe renal insufficiency. Syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion. Known hyponatremia.
Special Precautions
Elderly, patients w/ low serum Na levels & patients w/ high 24-hr urine vol, may have an increased risk for hyponatremia. Careful attention to fluid restriction in cases of concomitant treatment w/ drugs known to induce SIADH & concomitant treatment w/ NSAIDs. Treatment should be interrupted during acute intercurrent illness. Avoid fluid overload in the very young & the elderly, conditions characterized by fluid &/or electrolyte imbalance.
Adverse Reactions
Transient headache, nausea, stomach pain & hyponatremia.
Drug Interactions
TCA, SSRIs, chlorpromazine, carbamazepine, loperamide, medicines that slow down intestinal passage, pain reliever & anti-inflammatory medicines.
