Metformin HCl
Type 2 DM, particularly in overwt patients w/ dietary management & exercise alone does not result in adequate glycemic control. As monotherapy or in combination w/ other oral antidiabetics or w/ insulin in adults. As monotherapy or in combination w/ insulin in childn from 10 yr & adolescents.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 500 mg or 850 mg bid or tid as monotherapy or in combination w/ other oral antidiabetics or w/ insulin. Max: 3 g daily, taken as 3 divided doses. Childn from 10 yr & adolescent 500 mg or 850 mg once daily as monotherapy or in combination w/ insulin. Max: 2 g daily, taken as 2 or 3 divided doses.
Should be taken with food: Take w/ or after meals.
IDDM, ketoacidosis, severe infection, stress, trauma & other severe conditions where it is unlikely to control hyperglycemia. Heart failure, recent MI, dehydration, acute or chronic alcoholism or any other condition predisposing to lactic acidosis. Severe renal impairment or hepatic function. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain & anorexia. Taste disturbance.
Drug Interactions
Increased risk of lactic acidosis w/ cimetidine, diuretics, & alcohol & alcohol-containing medications.
