Rifaximin
Indications/Uses
Traveler's diarrhea, hepatic encephalopathy, small intestine bacterial overgrowth, irritable bowel syndrome, diverticular disease & inflammatory bowel disease.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & childn >12 yr Traveler's diarrhea 600 mg/day (1 tab every 8 hr) to 800 mg/day (2 tab every 12 hr) for 3 days. Hepatic encephalopathy 1,200 mg/day (2 tab every 8 hr) for 7-10 days. Diverticular disease of the colon 800 mg/day (2 tab every 12 hr) for 7-10 days. Repeated mthly treatment is recommended (7-10 days/mth). Small intestine bacterial overgrowth, irritable bowel syndrome & inflammatory bowel disease 800 mg/day (2 tab every 12 hr) to 1,200 mg/day (2 tab every 8 hr) for 7-14 days.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to rifaximin, rifampicin or rifabutin. Infectious diarrhea or traveler's diarrhea w/ fever &/or presence of blood in stools. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn <12 yr.
Special Precautions
Patients using estrogen for contraception. Patients w/ persistent symptoms of infectious diarrhea or traveler's diarrhea.
Adverse Reactions
Dizziness, headache, wind abdominal bloating, abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, urgency to evacuate feces, nausea, involuntary & painful or ineffective straining, vomiting, fever.
