Vitamin C, a widely used water-soluble vitamin is known for its numerous health benefits. Vitamin C plays a vital role as a co-factor in a variety of bodily functions. It is among the most essential nutrients needed for tissue building. Vitamin C acts as an important co-factor in building and maintaining body tissues especially the cartilage, dentin, skin, capillary walls and bones. Ascorbic acid helps in the formation of mature and firm collagen, the intercellular cement substance that binds body cells together to form strong tissues.
Ascorbic acid enhances resistance to stress. It promotes health of the adrenal gland, the organ where anti-stress substances are produced. Vitamin C also participates as a co-factor in the synthesis of epinephrine and norepinephrine, which are commonly known as adrenalin compounds. These anti-stress substances are released from the adrenals in response to stress. Upon stimulation of the adrenal gland during stress, vitamin C level decreases as the gland increases its activity in coping with stress. This condition requires an increase in vitamin C supplementation.
Vitamin C is known to increase body resistance to illnesses by enhancing the immune system. It is said to increase the mobility of the white blood cells, thereby improving the body's ability to fight infection. Ascorbic acid works both in alleviating the clinical manifestations and shortening the duration of certain disease like the common cold.
Ascorbic acid is also known for its antioxidant properties. Vitamin C protects the body cells against damaging effects of harmful substances called free radicals. Numerous researchers have also underscored the role of vitamin C in regulating blood cholesterol metabolism. Vitamin C is specifically required in the reactoin which converts cholesterol to cholic acid. Vitamin C is known to protect against cardiovascular diseases, asthma, respiratory tract infections, and in preventing certain cancers.
Numerous researches affirm the popular concept that the vitamin C pool in the body must be increased so that tissues will reach a certain level of vitamin C saturation that is required for optimum health.
For the prevention and treatment of vitamin C deficiency. For the maintenance of healthy skin, gums and teeth, bones, blood vessel walls and other connective tissues.

Urinary stone formers appear to be at higher risk for calculi if they take large doses of vitamin C daily. Large dose of vitamin C can also produce false positive results for glucose in the urine and false negative tests for blood in the stoos, thereby confusing early detection of diabetes mellitus and certain gastrointestinal diseases.
Nutricee tablet should be given with caution in patient with hyperoxaluria because large doses may cause oxaluria and formation of renal calcium oxalate stones. Tolerance may be induced in patients taking large doses, for prolonged period of time resulting in symptoms of deficiency when intake is reduced to normal. Nutricee tablet may cause diarrhea if taken in large doses.
Large doses should not be taken by pregnant women.

Urinary stone formers appear to be at higher risk for calculi if they take large doses of vitamin C daily. Large dose of vitamin C can also produce false positive results for glucose in urine and false negative test for blood in the stools. High doses may produce "rebound scurvy" in adults who abruptly stop or reduce high long-term intakes. Prolonged use of large doses of chewable ascorbic acid may cause erosion of the enamel. Large doses may also result in hemodialysis in patients with G6 deficiency.
Ascorbic acid can cause adverse reactions when taken with some drugs like aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs(NSAIDs), tetracycline, nitrates, warfarin and estrogen.
