Propranolol HCl
Indications/Uses
Management of HTN, angina pectoris, cardiac arrhythmias, MI, anxiety disorders & tremor.
Dosage/Direction for Use
HTN Initially 40-80 mg bid, increased as required to usual range of 160-320 mg daily; some patients may require up to 640 mg daily. Angina pectoris Initially 40 mg bid-tid, increased as required to usual range of 120-240 mg daily; some patients may require up to 320 mg daily. MI 40 mg qid for 2-3 days followed by 80 mg bid. Another regimen is to give 180-240 mg daily in divided doses. Long-term management of cardiac arrhythmias 30-160 mg daily in divided doses.
Contraindications
Pregnancy.
Special Precautions
Patients w/ CHF should be digitalized first before giving propranolol HCl. Not suitable for emergency treatment of HTN. Should not be stopped abruptly in angina as precipitation of MI & ventricular arrhythmias may occur.
Adverse Reactions
Heart failure, heart block & bronchospasm; fatigue & coldness of extremities.
