Indications/Uses
Treatment of infections due to Staph resistant to benzylpenicillin including bone & tissue infections, endocarditis, peritonitis (associated w/ continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis), pneumonia, skin disorders (including soft tissue infections), surgical infection & toxic shock syndrome.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 250 mg to 2 g/dose every 4-6 hr through IM or IV push over 10 min or IV infusion over 15-30 min. Childn 100-200 mg/kg/day in divided doses every 6 hr IM or IV push over 10 min of IV infusion over 15-60 min. Meningitis 200-400 mg/kg/day in divided doses every 6 hr. Max: 12 g/day IM/IV.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Hepatitis & cholestatic jaundice. Phlebitis.
Adverse Reactions
Allergy & pseudomembranous colitis.
Drug Interactions
Aminoglycosides. May antagonize bactericidal effect w/ tetracyclines.
