Indications/Uses
Anaerobic protozoal infections eg, amoebiasis (intestinal & extraintestinal), giardiasis, trichomoniasis, balantidiasis, blastocystiasis & dientamebiasis; bacterial infections including Bacteroides fragilis & Clostridium tetani.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Tab Urogenital trichomoniasis 1 tab morning & night for 7 days or 5 tab as a single dose. Amoebiasis Intestinal disease in suspceptible subject 2 tab tid for 5 days or 5 tab as a single dose for 3 days. Intestinal disease in less susceptible subject & chronic amoebic hepatitis 1 tab tid for 5-10 days or 5 tab as a single dose for 2 days. Amoebic liver abscess & other forms of extra intestinal amoebiasis 1 tab tid for 5 days or 5 tab as a single dose for 2 days. Acute ulcerative gingivitis 1 tab bid for 3 days. Giardiasis 1st course: 5 tab as a single dose for 3 days. 2nd course of treatment may be necessary 2 wk after the end of the 1st course. Anaerobic infections w/ other bacteriologically appropriate antibacterial agent for ≥7 days Adult 500 mg tid. Childn & infant 7 mg/kg tid. Prevention of anaerobic infections Adult 400 mg every 8 hr for 3-4 days up to 1 g. Inj Adult 500 mg (100 mL) infused over a period of 20 min at a rate of 5 mL/min 8 hrly. Childn <12 yr 7.5 mg/kg at a rate of 5 mL/min 8 hrly.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Patients w/ bloody dyscrasias or w/ active disease of CNS. Pregnancy.
Special Precautions
Tab: Avoid alcohol during treatment. Concomitant use w/ warfarin. Slight & transient falls in BP. Inj: Moderate leukopenia, perform total differential leukocyte count before long-term therapy. Admixture w/ 10% glucose, penicillin G, K & lactated Ringer's soln due to incompatibility. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Nausea, vomiting, vertigo. Tab: Peculiar taste in the mouth, furred tongue, GI upset, drowsiness, headache, ataxia, disorientation, skin rashes, pruritus. Bone marrow depression & peripheral neuropathy (large doses). Inj: Anorexia, abdominal pain, tiredness & dark coloration of urine.
Drug Interactions
May enhance effect of warfarin. Inj: Disulfiram. Metronidazole should not be mixed w/ any drug.
