Indications/Uses
Treatment & prevention of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women; reduces the incidence of vertebral fractures & composite endpoint of nonvertebral osteoporosis-related fractures. Increases bone mass in men w/ osteoporosis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 35 mg once a wk on the same day each wk.
Administration
Should be taken on an empty stomach: Take at least 30 min before the 1st food, other medicinal product or drink (other than plain water) of the day. Take while in upright (standing or sitting) position w/ a glass of plain water (≥120 mL). Do not lie down for 30 min after taking the tab. Swallow whole, do not suck/chew.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Hypocalcemia. Severe renal impairment (CrCl <30 mL/min). Pregnancy & lactation.
Special Precautions
Avoid intake at the same time w/ food, drinks & medicinal products containing polyvalent cations (eg, Ca, Mg, Fe & Al). High age or clinical risk factors for fracture. Patients w/ history of oesophageal disorders eg, stricture or achalasia; unable to stay in the upright position for at least 30 min after taking the tab; active or recent oesophageal or upper GI problems. Monitor patients who develop symptoms of esophageal irritation. Hypocalcemia & other disturbances of bone & mineral metabolism ie, parathyroid dysfunction, hypovitaminosis D should be treated before starting or at the time of starting therapy. Osteonecrosis of the jaw has been reported. Patients w/ rare hereditary problems of galactose intolerance & Lapp lactase deficiency or glucose malabsorption. Consider dental exam w/ appropriate preventive dentistry prior to treatment in patients w/ concomitant risk factors (eg, cancer chemotherapy, radiotherapy, corticosteroids, poor oral hygiene). Do not use during pregnancy & lactation. Elderly >80 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Headache; constipation, dyspepsia, nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea; musculoskeletal pain.
Drug Interactions
Concomitant use w/ ASA or NSAID (user of ≥3 days/wk). Interfered absorption w/ medications containing polyvalent cations (eg, Ca, Mg, Fe, Al).
