Ciprofloxacin HCl
Indications/Uses
UTI, chronic bacterial prostatitis, lower resp tract infections, otitis media, acute sinusitis, skin & skin structure infections, septicemia, bone & joint infections, complicated intra-abdominal infections, infectious diarrhea, typhoid fever (enteric fever), uncomplicated cervical & urethral gonorrhea, inhalational anthrax.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Acute uncomplicated UTI 250 mg 12 hrly for 3 days. Chronic bacterial prostatitis 500 mg 12 hrly for 28 days. Lower resp tract infections, acute sinusitis, skin, bone & joint infections, infectious diarrhea, typhoid fever 500 mg 12 hrly. Uncomplicated urethral & cervical gonococcal infection 250 mg as a single dose. Inhalational anthrax (post-exposure) Adult 500 mg 12 hrly. Childn 15 mg/kg/dose. Max: 500 mg/dose 12 hrly.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: May be taken w/ meals to minimize GI discomfort. Do not take w/ antacids, Fe or dairy products.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to quinolones. History of tendon disorder associated w/ fluoroquinolone administration.
Special Precautions
Dicontinue therapy if tendon pain, swelling or inflammation occurs. CNS disorders, risk of Torsade de pointes arrhythmia, myasthenia gravis, peripheral neuropathy, renal impairment. Avoid direct exposure to sunlight or UV radiation. May impair ability to drive or operate machinery. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn & adolescents. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain/discomfort, headache, restlessness, rash.
Drug Interactions
Theophylline, methylxanthines, caffeine, phenytoin, warfarin, probenecid, tizanidine, aminoglycosides, β-lactam antibiotics, chloramphenicol, clindamycin, clozapine, ciclosporin, duloxetine, foscamet, glibenclamide, lidocaine, methotrexate, mexiletine HCl, NSAIDs, pentoxifylline, opiates, piperacillin Na, other quinolones, ropinirole, tacrine.
