Cloxacillin Na

Indications/Uses

Cap: Treatment of infections due to penicillinase-producing Staph eg, skin & soft tissue, resp & GUT infections. Oral soln: Treatment of disseminated infections, upper & lower resp tract, skin & soft tissue infections.

Dosage/Direction for Use

Cap 500 mg 6 hrly. 125 mg/5 mL oral soln Adult 500 mg (4 tsp). Childn 3-10 yr 250 mg (2 tsp), up to 2 yr 125 mg (1 tsp). 250 mg/5 mL oral soln Adult 500 mg (2 tsp). Childn 3-10 yr 250 mg (1 tsp), up to 2 yr 125 mg (½tsp). All doses to be taken qid.

Administration

Should be taken on an empty stomach: Take 1 hr before or 2 hr after meals.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to cloxacillin & penicillins. Oral soln: Pregnancy (1st trimester).

Special Precautions

Cap: Overgrowth of nonsusceptible organism from prolonged use. Oral soln: Poor renal function.

Adverse Reactions

Hypersensitivity reactions. Cap: GI disorders. Rarely pseudomembranous colitis, transient hematuria, hematologic disorders & hepatic function changes. Oral soln: Occasionally anaphylaxis; hepatitis & cholestatic jaundice.

Drug Interactions

Cap: Aminoglycosides. Oral soln: May decrease efficacy of estrogen-containing OCs.
