Cefuroxime
Indications/Uses
Susceptible infections including bone & joint infections, bronchitis (& other lower resp tract infection), gonorrhea, meningitis, otitis media, peritonitis, pharyngitis, sinusitis, skin infections (including soft tissue infections) & UTI. Surgical infection prophylaxis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Administer by deep IM inj, slow IV inj or infusion over 3-5 min. Adult 750 mg every 8 hr. Severe infections 1.5 g IV every 6-8 hr for 5-10 days. Infant & childn 30-60 mg/kg/day, may be increased to 100 mg/kg/day in 3-4 divided doses. Neonate 30-60 mg/kg/day in 2-3 divided doses.
Special Precautions
Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin. History of allergy & penicillin-sensitive patients. Monitor renal & hematological status during prolonged use & high dose therapy. Renal impairment.
Adverse Reactions
GI disturbances including diarrhea, nausea, vomiting.
Drug Interactions
Reduced renal clearance w/ probenecid.
