Thiamazole
Indications/Uses
Mild to severe hyperthyroidism. Treatment of Grave's disease. Prep of hyperthyroid patients for thyroidectomy & use as an adjunct to radioactive iodine therapy.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Initially 15-60 mg daily in single or 3 divided doses. Euthyroid patient Reduce dose gradually to 5-15 mg daily maintenance dose. Childn 400 mcg/kg in divided doses, may be halved in maintenance dose.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Proven hypersensitivity to thiamazole & carbimazole. Agranulocytosis during previous treatment w/ thiamazole, carbimazole or PTU (in connection w/ the cross-hypersensitivity).
Special Precautions
Full blood count should be performed. Discontinue use if hepatotoxicity (cholestatic jaundice), vasculitis or lupus erythematosus syndrome (aplastic anemia, thrombocytopenia, nephrotic syndrome, loss of sense of taste) or agranulocytosis (fever, sore throat, nose bleeding, bacterial infection, number of granulocytes <1 x 10/L) occur. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Nausea, vomiting, gastric discomfort, headache, hair loss, bone marrow depression, fever, arthralgia, arthritis, rashes (eg, urticaria), leukopenia.
Drug Interactions
As Strumazol leads to a change in the metabolism, it may be necessary to adjust the dosage of other drugs.
