Indications/Uses
Treatment of infections due to sensitive gm +ve & gm -ve bacteria; gonorrhea; surgical prophylaxis; Haemophilus epiglottitis & meningitis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
IM/IV Adult Usual dose: 2-6 g daily in 2-3 divided doses. Gonorrhea 1 g single dose. Surgical prophylaxis 1 g 30-90 min before surgery. Caesarian section 1 g as soon as umbilical cord is claimed & 2 further doses 6-12 hr later. Severe infection 12 g in 3-6 divided doses. Pseudomonal infection 6 g daily. Childn 100-150 mg/kg in 2-4 divided doses, maybe increased to 200 mg/kg. Neonate 50 mg/kg.
Contraindications
History of allergy or hypersensitivity to cephalosporins.
Adverse Reactions
GI effects; anaphylactic shock (rare).
Drug Interactions
Probenecid & alkaline soln eg, Na bicarbonate.
