Cefixime trihydrate
Taxim-O/Taxim-O Forte: Alternative treatment of UTI, otitis media, resp tract infections caused by susceptible organisms including penicillin-susceptible S. pneumoniae, S. pyogenes, H. influenzae & Enterobacteriaceae w/ poor compliance or poor response to conventional oral antibiotics. Outpatient therapy of serious soft tissue or skeletal infection due to susceptible organisms & single oral dose treatment of uncomplicated cervical/urethral gonorrhea. Taxim-O 400: Uncomplicated UTI, uncomplicated gonorrhea, otitis media, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, acute bronchitis, acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Taxim-O Adult & childn >10 yr & weighing >50 kg 200-400 mg daily, given as a single or in 2 divided doses. Renal impairment CrCl ≥20 mL/min Normal dose, CrCl <20 mL/min, patients on chronic peritoneal dialysis or haemodialysis 200 mg once daily. Taxim-O 400 Adult 200-400 mg daily as a single dose or in 2 divided doses. Uncomplicated cervical/urethral gonococcal infections 400 mg as a single dose. Childn 8 mg/kg/day as a single dose or in 2 divided doses. Renal impairment CrCl 21-60 mL/min 300 mg daily, <20 mL/min 200 mg daily. Hemodialysis 300 mg daily. Continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis 200 mg daily. Taxim-O Forte Childn 8 mg/kg/day as a single or in 2 divided doses.
May be taken with or without food.
Hypersensitivity to cefixime or cephalosporins. Taxim-O 400: Pseudomembranous colitis.
Special Precautions
Hypersensitivity; penicillin-sensitive patients. Discontinue if allergic reaction occurs. Overgrowth of clostridia. Consider diagnosis of pseudomembranous colitis in patients who develop diarrhea. History of GI disease, particularly colitis. Monitor prothrombin time. Renal impairment. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn <6 mth. Taxim-O 400: Contains aspartame which may cause allergic type reaction.
Adverse Reactions
Diarrhea, stool changes; headache & dizziness; rash, pruritus, drug fever, arthralgia; thrombocytosis, thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, hypereosinophilia, neutropenia & agranulocytosis; mild transient changes in liver & renal function tests; transient rise in liver transaminases, alkaline phosphatase, jaundice; genital pruritus & vaginitis. Erythema multiforme, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis. Abdominal pain, nausea, dyspepsia, flatulence, vomiting; seizures; hyperbilirubinemia; general pruritus, vaginitis, candidiasis, toxic epidermal necrolysis.
Drug Interactions
False +ve reaction for glucose in urine w/ Benedict's or Fehling's soln or w/ copper sulfate test. False +ve direct Coombs' test. Increased prothrombin time w/ warfarin & anticoagulants. Elevated carbamazepine levels.
