Atenolol
Indications/Uses
HTN, angina pectoris, MI & cardiac arrhythmias. Prophylactic treatment of migraine.
Dosage/Direction for Use
HTN Initially 25-50 mg daily. May be gradually increased to 50-100 mg. Angina pectoris 100 mg daily in 1-2 divided doses. Arrhythmias 50-100 mg daily.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Sinus bradycardia, heart failure, 2nd- & 3rd-degree heart block. Patients w/ cardiogenic shock, hypotension, metabolic acidosis, severe peripheral circulatory disturbances, sick sinus syndrome, untreated pheochromocytoma & uncontrolled heart failure.
Special Precautions
Renal failure. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Sclerosing peritonitis & retroperitoneal fibrosis, atrial fibrillation, reversible cholestatic hepatitis, hepatic dysfunction, visual symptoms w/o headache, hypotension, transient elevation of serum creatinine, renal artery thrombosis.
