Indications/Uses
Biliary tract infections, bronchitis, endocarditis, epiglottis, gastroenteritis, gonorrhea, listeriosis, bacterial meningitis, otitis media, peritonitis, pneumonia, septicemia, typhoid & paratyphoid fever & UTI.
Dosage/Direction for Use
IV/IM Resp tract & soft tissue infections Patients weighing ≥40 kg 250-500 mg every 6 hr, <40 kg 25-50 mg/kg daily in equally divided doses every 6-8 hr. GI or GUT infections Patients weighing ≥40 kg 500 mg every 6 hr, <40 kg 50 mg/kg daily in equally divided doses every 6-8 hr. Gonorrhea Adult 500 mg for 2 doses every 8-12 hr. Adult & childn Bacterial meningitis 150-300 mg/kg daily in equally divided doses every 3-4 hr. Septicemia 150-200 mg/kg daily IV for at least 3 days, continue by IM every 3-4 hr.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Discontinue if skin rash occurs. Patients w/ infectious mononucleosis, lymphatic leukemia. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Urticarial or maculopapular skin rashes.
Drug Interactions
May decrease efficacy of estrogen-containing OCs, Prolonged bleeding time following treatment w/ coagulants. Antagonism w/ chloramphenicol. Increased frequency of skin rashes w/ allopurinol.
