Fenofibrate
Indications/Uses
Adjunctive therapy to diet for hypertriglyceridemia (Fredrickson types IV & V), primary hypercholesterolemia or mixed dyslipidemia (Fredrickson types IIa, IIb) who are at risk of pancreatitis & who do not respond adequately to dietary effort.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Usual dose: 200-400 mg daily in divided doses. Childn 5 mg/kg daily.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Take w/ meals for better absorption.
Contraindications
Hepatic & renal insufficiency. Concomitant use w/ another fibrate; HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors. Childn.
Special Precautions
Perform regular monitoring of LFT during therapy. Discontinue therapy if enzymes levels persist >3 times the normal limit. Not recommended for pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Headache; vertigo; digestive, gastric or intestinal disorders (abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, flatulence); reactions eg, rashes, pruritus, urticarial or photosensitivity reactions; cutaneous photosensitivity may occur w/ erythema, vesiculation or nodulation on parts of skin exposed to sunlight or artificial UV light (eg, sun lamp); fatigue.
Drug Interactions
Increased risk of rhabdomyolysis w/ other fibrates. Increased effect of oral anticoagulants w/ the risk of hemorrhage. May produce nephrotoxicity w/ ciclosporin.
