Azithromycin dihydrate
Mild to moderate infections caused by susceptible organisms eg, resp tract, uncomplicated skin & soft tissue, uncomplicated genital, chlamydial & non-gonococcal urethritis infections, chancroid & pelvic inflammatory disease.
Dosage/Direction for Use
All indications other than STD Total dose: 1.5 g to be given as 500 mg daily for 3 days or initial dose of 500 mg followed by 250 mg once daily for 4 days. Uncomplicated STD caused by Chlamydia trachomatis 1 g as single dose. Uncomplicated gonorrhea 2 g as single dose. Prophylaxis of disseminated MAC infections 1.2 g once wkly. As treatment or secondary prophylaxis of MAC infections 500 mg once daily w/ other antimycobacterials. Mild to moderate typhoid caused by multidrug resistant strains 500 mg once daily for 7 days.
May be taken with or without food: May be taken w/ meals to reduce GI discomfort.
Hypersensitivity to azithromycin, erythromycin or any macrolide antibiotics.
Special Precautions
Patients at risk for irregular heart beat eg, history of existing QT prolongation, low blood levels of K or Mg & those taking drugs for arrhythmias; severe hepatic impairment; renal impairment. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Anorexia, nausea, abdominal discomfort, cramps, flatulence, vomiting & diarrhea; chest pain, melena, nephritis, vaginitis, headache, taste disturbances, vertigo, dizziness, convulsions, somnolence, tinnitus & fatigue; reversible sensorineural hearing loss, eosinophilia, acute interstitial nephritis, irregular heart beat.
Drug Interactions
May interact w/ Al & Mg-containing antacids. Ventricular arrhythmias w/ astemizole, cisapride & terfenadine. Possibly affect metabolism of digoxin & OC. Increased serum conc w/ nelfinavir. Caution in co-administration w/ drugs known to prolong QT interval, zidovudine, ergot derivatives, coumarin & ciclosporin.
