Atorvastatin Ca
Primary hypercholesterolemia, homozygous & heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia or combined (mixed) hyperlipidemia in patients who have not responded adequately to diet & other appropriate measures.
Dosage/Direction for Use
5-80 mg/day as a single dose.
May be taken with or without food: May take w/o regard to time of day. Avoid excessive consumption (>1 L/day) of grapefruit juice. 
Hypersensitivity. Active liver disease or unexplained persistent elevations of serum transaminases. Women of childbearing potential. Pregnancy & lactation.
Special Precautions
Perform liver function tests prior to initiation of treatment & periodically thereafter. Consumption of substantial quantities of alcohol &/or history of liver disease. Temporary withheld or discontinue in patients w/ acute/serious condition suggestive of myopathy or those w/ predisposing risk factors for rhabdomyolysis eg, severe acute infection, hypotension, major surgery, trauma, severe metabolic, endocrine & electrolyte disorders & uncontrolled seizures.
Adverse Reactions
Flatulence, constipation, diarrhea, dyspepsia, nausea, headache, asthenia, abdominal pain, insomnia, myalgia.
Drug Interactions
Increased risk of myopathy w/ cyclosporine, fibric acid derivatives, erythromycin, azole antifungals & niacin. Decreased plasma conc w/ cholestyramine & oral antacid susp containing Mg & Al hydroxides. Increased steady-state plasma conc of digoxin.
ATC Classification
C10AA05 - atorvastatin ; Belongs to the class of HMG CoA reductase inhibitors. Used in the treatment of hyperlipidemia.
