Minocycline HCl
Indications/Uses
Treatment of infections due to susceptible strains of the organisms: Gallbladder infections, UTI, skin & soft tissue infections, resp tract infections.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Initially 100-200 mg, followed by 100 mg 12 hrly. Alternatively, 50 mg bd-qds initially, followed by 50 mg 6 hrly. Therapy should be continued for 1-2 days beyond the time when characteristic symptoms or fever have subsided. Syphilis Therapy should be given over a period of 10-15 days. Childn ≥13 yr Initially 4 mg/kg, followed by 2 mg/kg 12 hrly.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: May be taken w/ meals to reduce GI discomfort.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to minocycline or other tetracyclines.
Special Precautions
Lupus erythematosus, gonorrhoea, hepatic dysfunction. Concomitant anticoagulant therapy. Avoid administration of isotretinoin or other systemic retinoids or retinol and antacids containing Al,Ca,Mg. Avoid exposure to sunlight/UV light. History of allergy, asthma, hay fever or urticaria. Superinfection. May impair ability to drive or operate machinery. Pregnancy, lactation & childn <13 yr.
Adverse Reactions
CNS effects, GI disturbances, discoloration of bone & teeth, maculopapular & erythematous rashes, hypersensitivity reactions.
Drug Interactions
Anticoagulants, antacids containing Al, Ca or Mg & oral Fe prep, penicillins.
