Terazosin HCl
Indications/Uses
Relief of manifestations of mild to moderate benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Treatment of HTN (monotherapy or in combination w/ other antihypertensives eg diuretics or β-blockers).
Dosage/Direction for Use
Initial dose: 1 mg at bedtime. BPH Recommended dose: 5-10 mg once daily. Starting dose: 1 mg at bedtime for the 1st 4 days, then every morning for the next 3 days; 1 tab of 2 mg every morning for the next 7 days; increased to 1 tab of 5 mg every morning for the 3rd wk. Maintenance dose: 5-10 mg once daily every morning on the 4th wk. HTN 1-5 mg once daily.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Syncope preceded by severe supraventricular tachycardia (120-160 bpm) & 1st dose effect, history of micturition syncope; orthostatic hypotension; concomitant use w/ phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors; intraoperative floppy iris syndrome during cataract surgery; possibility of hemodilution in laboratory findings. May affect the ability to drive or operate machinery. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn.
Adverse Reactions
Asthenia, blurred vision, dizziness, nasal congestion, nausea, peripheral oedema, palpitations, somnolence, postural hypotension & impotence.
Drug Interactions
Other antihypertensives (eg Ca antagonists), diuretics; ACE inhibitors, phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors.
ATC Classification
G04CA03 - terazosin ; Belongs to the class of alpha-adrenoreceptor antagonists. Used in the treatment of benign prostatic hypertrophy.
