Influenza virus surface antigens (inactivated) (haemagglutinin & neuraminidase)
Indications/Uses
Prophylaxis of influenza, especially for those w/ increased risk of associated complications in adults & childn from 3 yr.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & childn from 3 yr 0.5 mL by IM or deep SC inj. Childn <9 yr who have not previously been vaccinated w/ a seasonal influenza vaccine Should be given a 2nd dose of 0.5 mL after an interval of at least 4 wk.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to influenza virus surface antigen, residues of eggs (ovalbumin, chicken proteins), formaldehyde, cetyltrimethylammonium Br, polysorbate 80 or gentamicin. Postpone immunisation in patients w/ febrile illness or acute infection.
Special Precautions
Do not administer intravascularly. Individuals w/ thrombocytopenia or any coagulation disorder since bleeding may occur following an IM administration. Anxiety-related reactions [eg, vasovagal (syncope), hyperventilation or stress-related reactions] can occur following, or even prior to vaccination; can be accompanied by several neurological signs (eg, transient visual disturbance, paraesthesia & tonic-clonic limb movements during recovery). Have procedures in place to avoid injury from faints. Not effective against all possible influenza virus strains. Intended to provide protection against virus strains from which the vaccine is prepared & to closely related strains. Protective immune response may not be elicited in all vaccines. Patients w/ endogenous or iatrogenic immunosuppression. Interference w/ serological testing. Childn <3 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Headache; fatigue. Sweating. Myalgia, arthralgia; malaise, shivering, local reactions (eg, pain, redness, swelling, ecchymosis, induration). Childn: Drowsiness; appetite loss; GI symptoms; irritability. Diarrhoea, vomiting.
Drug Interactions
Diminished immunological response w/ immunosuppressants. False +ve results in serology tests using ELISA for HIV1, hepatitis C & HTLV1.
