Pharmacology: Magrilan is a new antidepressant with a different molecule to all existing antidepressants.
In animal studies, Fluoxetine showed to exert directly on nonadrenergic and dopaminergic receptors.
The exerted activity is probably due to the selective inhibition of the serotonin intake in the presynaptic neurones.
Indications/Uses
Depression of various origin or depression with anxiety symptoms.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Magrilan is administered orally once or twice daily. The dosage is 20-60 mg daily. Elderly: In older patients, dosage should not exceed 60 mg/day.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to fluoxetine.
Special Precautions
In renally impaired patients, accumulation of Magrilan may occur. Dosage should be adjusted accordingly.
Use Magrilan with caution in severe hepatic impairment.
Effects on the Ability to Drive or Operate Machinery: It is not advisable to prescribe fluoxetine to people driving vehicles or using machinery. Use in pregnancy & lactation: Animal studies did not reveal any teratogenicity for fluoxetine. However, it is not advisable to administer to pregnant women or lactating mothers.

Adverse Reactions
Magrilan is generally well tolerated. Anticholinergic effects (constipation, dryness of the mouth, etc) as well as central nervous system symptoms eg, nausea, vertigo, somnolence, headache may occur.
Loss of appetite has been registered to occur frequently.
Sedation, weakness and myalgia have also been reported to occur but they are extremely rare.
Rash (discontinue treatment; it may be associated with vasculitis, anaphylaxis and pulmonary inflammation or fibrosis).
