Synthetic salmon calcitonin
Indications/Uses
Bone pain associated w/ osteolysis &/or osteopenia; Paget's bone disease (osteitis deformans); neurodystrophic disorders (algodystrophy or Sudeck's disease). Hypercalcemia & hypercalcemic crisis due to tumoral osteolysis secondary to breast, lung or kidney carcinoma, myeloma & other malignancies; hyperparathyroidism, immobilization or vit D intoxication, for both acute treatment of emergencies & prolonged treatment of chronic hypercalcemia. Adjuvant therapy of acute pancreatitis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Bone pain associated w/ osteolysis &/or osteopenia 100-200 IU daily by slow IV infusion, or by SC or IM in divided doses. Paget's disease 100 IU daily or every 2nd day by SC or IM. Duration of treatment: 3 mth, max of 6 mth under exceptional circumstances eg, patients w/ impending pathologic fracture. Emergency treatment of hypercalcemic crisis 5-10 IU/kg in 500 mL physiological saline daily by IV infusion over at least 6 hr or by slow IV inj in 2-4 divided doses. Chronic hypercalcemic states 5-10 IU/kg daily by SC or IM as a single or in 2 divided doses. Preferably by IM (& multiple sites of inj) if the vol to be inj is >2 mL. Neurodystrophic disorders 100 IU daily by SC or IM for 2-4 wk. An additional 100 IU may be given every 2nd day for up to 6 wk. Acute pancreatitis 300 IU by IV infusion over 24 hr up to 6 consecutive days.
Special Precautions
Monitor for systemic allergic & allergic-type reactions including single cases of anaphylactic shock. Consider skin testing prior to treatment in patients w/ suspected sensitivity to calcitonin. Risk of malignancies in patients w/ OA & osteoporosis during long-term use. May impair ability to drive or operate machinery. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn <18 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Dizziness, headache, dysgeusia; flushing, nausea, diarrhoea, abdominal pain; arthralgia; fatigue.
