Indications/Uses
Dosage/Direction for Use
Severe pain 10-20 mg 12 hrly. May be increased depending on severity, age & previous history of analgesic requirements. Post-op pain (24 hr after surgery) Patients >70 kg 30 mg 12 hrly, <70 kg 20 mg 12 hrly.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: Swallow whole, do not chew/crush.
Contraindications
Resp depression, head injury, paralytic ileus, biliary colic, delayed gastric emptying, obstructive airways disease, cardiac arrhythmias, acute hepatic disease; concurrent MAOIs (or w/in 2 wk). Not recommended for pre-op use or for the 1st 24 hr post-op. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn.
Special Precautions
Hypothyroidism, raised intracranial pressure, hypotension w/ hypovolaemia, biliary tract disorder, pancreatitis; severe cor pulmonale, severe bronchial asthma, severe chronic obstructive lung disease; inflammatory bowel disorders, prostatic hypertrophy, adrenocortical insufficiency; resp depression, renal/hepatic disease; 24 hr prior to cordotomy or other pain relieving surgery; abdominal surgery, prior substance abuse, tolerance & physical dependence may develop. Avoid abrupt cessation of prolonged use & therapy. History of epilepsy. May impair ability to drive or operate machinery. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
GI & CNS disturbances, bronchospasm, decreased cough, rash, sweating, pruritus, chills.
Drug Interactions
MAOIs, CNS depressants including sedatives or hypnotics, general anaesth, phenothiazines, other tranquillizers, muscle relaxants, antihypertensives, alcohol; cimetidine.
