Type 2 DM whose hyperglycaemia is not controlled satisfactorily by diet, wt reduction & exercise. In combination w/ metformin in type 2 DM unsatisfactorily controlled on metformin alone. Adjunct to diet & exercise.
Initially 0.5 mg, titrated on wkly or bi-wkly basis. Patient transferred from another oral hypoglycemic agent Initially 1 mg. Max single dose: 4 mg. Max total daily dose: 16 mg.

Administration
Should be taken with food: Usually taken w/in 15 min of the meal but time may vary from immediately preceding the meal to as long as 30 min before the meal. Patients who skip a meal (or add an extra meal) should be instructed to skip (or add) a dose for that meal.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Type 1 DM, C-peptide -ve. Diabetic ketoacidosis w/ or w/o coma. Severe hepatic dysfunction. Concomitant use of gemfibrozil.
Discontinue use if patient is exposed to stress eg, fever, trauma, infection or surgery. Increased risk of hypoglycaemia w/ combination treatment. Increased incidence of acute coronary syndrome (eg, MI). Debilitated or malnourished patients. Renal & hepatic insufficiency. May affect the ability to drive or operate machinery in case of hypoglycaemia. Pregnancy & lactation.
