Baclofen
Indications/Uses
Alleviation of signs & symptoms of spasticity resulting from multiple sclerosis. Patients w/ spinal cord injuries & other spinal cord diseases.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Initially 5 mg tds for 3 days, then gradually increase to 10 mg, 15 mg & 20 mg tds at 3-day intervals until optimum effect is achieved. Max: 80 mg daily (20 mg qds).
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Lactation.
Special Precautions
Avoid abrupt w/drawal of therapy. Renal insufficiency; stroke; epilepsy or history of convulsive disorders. Patients who use spasticity to sustain upright posture & balance in locomotion; or to obtain increased function. Presence or history of peptic ulcer; resp or hepatic failure; underlying bladder sphincter hypertonia; DM; psychiatric disorders eg psychosis, schizophrenia or confusional state. May impair ability to drive or operate machinery. Pregnancy. Women of childbearing potential. Childn <12 yr. Elderly w/ cerebrovascular disease.
Adverse Reactions
Transient somnolence, sedation, dizziness, weakness & fatigue.
Drug Interactions
TCAs, MAOIs, antihypertensives; levodopa + carbidopa (in patients w/ Parkinson's disease); antidiabetic agents (oral & insulin); Mg sulfate or other neuromuscular blockers; drugs that can significantly impact renal function.
