Indications/Uses
Infections caused by ciprofloxacin-sensitive pathogens eg, UTI except prostatitis, urethritis & cervicitis gonorrhoea; resp tract infections except pneumonia caused by Streptococcus; skin & soft-tissue, bone & joint infections, GIT includng typhoid fever & paratyphoid.
Dosage/Direction for Use
UTI Mild: 250 mg bd, severe: 500 mg bd. Resp tract, bone, joint, skin & soft tissue infections Mild: 500 mg bd, severe: 750 mg bd. GIT 500 mg bd. Acute gonorrhoea 250 mg as single daily dose. Impaired renal function (CrCl <20 mL/min) 250 or 500 mg bd.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: May be taken w/ meals to minimize GI discomfort. Do not take w/ antacids, Fe or dairy products.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to ciprofloxacin or other quinolone chemotherapeutics. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn & growing childn.
Special Precautions
Discontinue use if peripheral neuropathy occurs. Patients w/ renal insufficiency, epilepsy, CNS disorders. Maintain adequate hydration. May affect ability to drive or operate machinery. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, dyspepsia, abdominal pain, flatulence, anorexia; dizziness, headache, tiredness; eosinophilia, leukocytopenia, leukocytosis, anemia; skin reactions eg, rashes.
Drug Interactions
Reduced absorption w/ antacids containing Al or Mg hydroxide. Increased plasma conc of theophylline. Probenecid & coumarin anticoagulants.
