Medicinal charcoal
Indications/Uses
Diarrhoea & poisoning due to foods, heavy metals & drugs. Flatulence due to diet & other factors.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Diarrhoea Adult 2-4 tab tds-qds. Childn ½ adult dose. Intoxication Adult 2-4 tab/kg body wt, childn 3-4 tab/kg body wt. Flatulence Adult 1-2 tab immediately after meal & repeat every 2 hr.
Administration
Should be taken on an empty stomach: Take w/ plenty of liqd. Allow to disintegrate in water w/ stirring or take whole w/ liqd.
Contraindications
Febrile diarrhoea. Intoxication w/ corrosive substance (strong acids & alkalis).
Special Precautions
Not recommended in intoxications w/ organic & inorganic salts as well as solvents eg, lithium, thallium, cyanide, Fe salts, methanol, ethanol & ethylene glycol. Frequently monitor GI sounds to assess peristaltic action.
Adverse Reactions
Constipation & mechanical ileus in high doses. Black stools.
Drug Interactions
Reduced effect of other drugs when given concomitantly.
