Tonsillopharyngitis is the inflammation of the tonsils and pharynx.
Etiologies include bacterial and viral pathogens.
Sore throat is the most common presenting symptom in older children.

Supportive Therapy

General Measures
  • Adequate fluid intake
  • Warm saline gargle (¼-½ tsp of salt per 8 oz glass of warm water)
  • Elimination of close contact with family members or visitors if patient has been confirmed to have group A beta-hemolytic streptococcus (GABHS)
  • Remain at home until 24 hours of antibiotic therapy has been received
Alternative Therapy
  • There are not enough studies to support use of acupuncture, probiotics, dietary supplements and herbal treatments for symptomatic tonsillopharyngitis
