Amikacin sulfate
Indications/Uses
Serious infections caused by susceptible organisms eg, bone & joint, skin & soft tissue (including burn wound infections), resp tract, bacterial septicaemia, intra-abdominal septicemia, upper resp tract infection, CNS mainly in neonates.
Dosage/Direction for Use
IM/IV infusion Adult, childn & older infants 5 mg/kg every 8 hr or 7.5 mg/kg every 12 hr for 7-10 days. Max: 1.5 g/day for >10 days. Neonates Initially 10 mg/kg, then 7.5 mg/kg 12 hrly.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to amikacin sulfate or aminoglycosides. Pregnancy & lactation, infant.
Special Precautions
Impaired renal function. May cause auditory & vestibular toxicity; hearing loss may occur & progress to deafness. Impaired renal function. Childn.
Adverse Reactions
Ototoxicity, nephrotoxicity, & neurotoxicity; ringing or any loss of hearing, unsteadiness, dizziness, increased or decreased frequency of urination or amount of urine, increased thirst, loss of appetite, nausea & vomiting.
Drug Interactions
Concurrent use w/ other potentially ototoxic, nephrotoxic, or neurotoxic drugs (eg, other aminoglycosides, capreomycin, methoxyflurane, polymyxins, general anesth & opioid analgesics). Extemporaneous admixtures w/ other drugs.
