Indications/Uses
Treatment of schizophrenia & acute manic or mixed episodes. Maintenance treatment of bipolar I disorder. Adjunctive treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD), irritability associated w/ autistic disorder, agitation associated w/ schizophrenia or bipolar mania & Tourette's disorder.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Schizophrenia Initially 10-15 mg/day. Dose adjustment should not be made before 2 wk. Recommended dose: 10-15 mg/day. Max: 30 mg/day. Childn 13-17 yr Initially 2 mg/day, titrate to 5 mg/day after 2 days & to 10 mg/day after an additional 2 days. Subsequent dose increase in 5-mg increments. Recommended dose: 10 mg/day. Max: 30 mg/day. Bipolar I disorder, manic or mixed schizophrenia Initially 15 mg/day. Adjunct treatment: 10-15 mg/day. Recommended dose: 15 mg/day. Max: 30 mg. 10-17 yr Initially 2 mg/day, titrate to 5 mg/day after 2 days & to 10 mg/day after an additional 2 days. Subsequent dose increase in 5-mg increments. Recommended dose: 10 mg/day. Max: 30 mg/day. MDD Initially 2-5 mg/day, adjusted to 5 mg/day at intervals of no less than 1 wk. Recommended dose: 5-10 mg/day. Max: 15 mg/day. Irritability associated w/ autistic disorder 6-17 yr Initially 2 mg/day, adjusted to 5 mg/day at intervals of no less than 1 wk. Recommended dose: 5-10 mg/day. Max: 15 mg/day. Tourette's disorder 6-18 yr Initially 2 mg/day, adjusted to 5 mg/day at intervals of no less than 2 wk. Recommended dose: 2-20 mg/day. Max: 20 mg/day.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity.
Special Precautions
Patients w/ dementia-related psychosis. Increased risk of suicidality. Neuroleptic malignant syndrome, tardive dyskinesia, hyperglycemia, DM, orthostatic hypotension, seizures/convulsions, dysphagia. May disrupt body's ability to reduce core body temp. May impair ability to drive or operate machinery. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Nausea, vomiting, constipation, headache, dizziness, akathisia, anxiety, insomnia, restlessness, somnolence, extrapyramidal disorder, sedation, tremor, fatigue, blurred vision, salivary hypersecretion.
Drug Interactions
May enhance the effect of certain antihypertensives. Other centrally-acting drugs or alcohol, carbamazepine, ketoconazole, quinidine, fluoxetine or paroxetine.
