Per 228 mg/5 mL Amoxicillin trihydrate 200 mg, K clavulanate 28.5 mg. Per 457 mg/5 mL Amoxicillin trihydrate 400 mg, K clavulanate 57 mg
Indications/Uses
Short-term treatment of bacterial infections of upper & lower resp tract, urinary tract, skin & soft tissue. Dental infections.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Recommended dose: Mild to moderate infections (upper & lower resp tract infections, & skin & soft tissue infections) 25/3.6 mg/kg/day. More serious infections (upper & lower resp tract infections, & UTI) 45/6.4 mg/kg/day. 228 mg/5 mL susp Mild to moderate infections Childn 7-12 yr (22-40 kg) 10 mL bid, 2-6 yr (13-21 kg) 5 mL bid. Severe infections Childn 2-6 yr (13-21 kg) 10 mL bid. 457 mg/5 mL susp Mild to moderate infections Childn 7-12 yr (22-40 kg) 5 mL bid, 2-6 yr (13-21 kg) 2.5 mL bid. Childn 2 mth to 2 yr weighing 15 kg 2.3 mL bid, 14 kg 2.2 mL bid, 13 kg 2 mL bid, 12 kg 1.9 mL bid, 11 kg 1.7 mL bid, 10 kg 1.6 mL bid, 9 kg 1.4 mL bid, 8 kg 1.3 mL bid, 7 kg 1.1 mL bid, 6 kg 0.9 mL bid, 5 kg 0.8 mL bid, 4 kg 0.6 mL bid, 3 kg 0.5 mL bid, 2 kg 0.3 mL bid. Administration
May be taken with or without food: Best taken at the start of meals for better absorption & to reduce GI discomfort.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to β-lactams eg, penicillins & cephalosporins. History of Augmentin-associated jaundice/hepatic dysfunction.
Special Precautions
History of penicillin hypersensitivity. Discontinue treatment if an allergic reaction occurs; prolonged or significant diarrhea. Avoid if infectious mononucleosis is suspected. Prolonged use may result to overgrowth of nonsusceptible organism. Pseudomembranous colitis. Appropriate monitoring of prothrombin time or INR in patients taking oral anticoagulants. Evidence of hepatic dysfunction. Not recommended in patients w/ renal impairment. Maintain adequate fluid intake & urinary output to reduce the possibility of crystalluria. Patients w/ phenylketonuria. Pregnancy (especially 1st trimester).
Adverse Reactions
Diarrhoea. Mucocutaneous candidiasis; nausea, vomiting.
Drug Interactions
Decreased renal tubular secretion w/ probenecid. Increased risk of allergic skin reactions w/ allopurinol. May reduce oestrogen reabsorption & efficacy of OCs. Increased INR w/ acenocoumarol or warfarin. Reduced pre-dose conc of the active metabolite of mycophenolate mofetil (mycophenolic acid).
