Dutasteride
Indications/Uses
Treatment & prevention of progression of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) through alleviating symptoms, reducing prostate (vol), improving urinary flow rate & reducing the risk of acute urinary retention (AUR) & the need for BPH-related surgery alone or in combination w/ tamsulosin.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult males (including elderly) 1 cap once daily. May be used alone or in combination w/ the α-blocker tamsulosin (0.4 mg).
Administration
May be taken with or without food: Swallow whole, do not chew/open.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to dutasteride or other 5-α reductase inhibitors. Women & childn.
Special Precautions
Liver disease. Perform digital rectal exam & other evaluations for prostate cancer prior to initiating therapy & periodically thereafter. Establish new prostate-specific antigen (PSA) baseline after 6 mth of treatment. Monitor PSA values regularly thereafter & evaluate carefully. Risk of prostate cancer & high grade tumours. Possible occurrence of breast cancer. Women & childn must avoid contact w/ leaking cap. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Impotence, altered (decreased) libido, ejaculation disorders, breast disorders.
Drug Interactions
Decreased clearance w/ CYP3A4 inhibitors (eg, verapamil & diltiazem).
