Alfacalcidol (1α-hydroxy vit D3)
Indications/Uses
Improvement of various symptoms of hypocalcemia, tetany, bone lesions due to abnormal metabolism of vit D in chronic renal failure, hypoparathyroidism, vit D-resistant rickets, osteomalacia & osteoporosis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Chronic renal failure, osteoporosis 0.5-1 mcg once daily. Hypoparathyroidism & other diseases associated w/ abnormal metabolism of vit D 1-4 mcg once daily.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Special Precautions
Measure serum Ca periodically. Discontinue treatment when hypercalcemia occurs. Pregnancy. Childn.
Adverse Reactions
Anorexia, nausea, vomiting, abdominal fullness, diarrhea, constipation, stomachache, stomach discomfort, dyspepsia, oral discomfort, dry mouth; headache, dull headache, insomnia, irritated feeling, weakness, fatigue, vertigo, numbness, drowsiness, failure of memory, ear buzzing, senile deafness, back pain, shoulder stiffness, feeling of leg stiffness, chest pain; mild increase in BP, palpitation; increase in GOT, GPT, LDH & γ-GTP; elevation of BUN & creatinine; feeling of pruritus & rash, hot feeling; conjunctival congestion; periarticular calcification; hoarseness & edema.
Drug Interactions
Hypermagnesemia may occur w/ Mg-containing drugs.
