Brimonidine tartrate
Indications/Uses
Lowering of IOP in patients w/ open-angle glaucoma or ocular HTN.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & childn ≥2 yr Glaucoma & ocular HTN Instill 1 drop in affected eye(s) tid, approx every 8 hr.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Patients receiving MAOI therapy.
Special Precautions
Severe CV disease, depression, cerebral/coronary insufficiency, Raynaud's phenomenon, orthostatic hypotension or thromboangiitis obliterans. Potential for decrease in mental alertness in patients who engage in hazardous activities; may cause fatigue or drowsiness. Monitor IOP of patients in IOP-lowering medication. Renal/hepatic impairment. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn <2 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Allergic conjunctivitis, conjunctival hyperemia, eye pruritus. Burning sensation, conjunctival folliculosis, HTN, oral dryness, visual disturbance, allergic reaction, asthenia, blepharitis, bronchitis, conjunctival edema & hemorrhage, conjunctivitis, cough, dizziness, dyspepsia, dyspnea, epiphora, eye discharge/dryness/irritation/pain, eyelid edema/erythema, flu syndrome, follicular conjunctivitis, foreign body sensation, headache, pharyngitis, photophobia, rash, rhinitis, sinus infection, sinusitis, superficial punctate keratopathy, visual field defect, vitreous floaters, worsened visual acuity.
Drug Interactions
Additive CNS depressant effects w/ alcohol, general anesth, barbiturates, opiates, sedatives. Additive IOP lowering & CV effects w/ topical or systemic adrenergic blocking agents, hypotensive agent. Additive & CV effects w/ cardiac glycosides. May affect metabolism & uptake of circulating amine w/ TCAs.
