Indications/Uses
Infections caused by bacteria involving the resp tract, abdomen, skin & soft tissues, kidney & UTI, bones & joints, ear infection, gonorrhoea. Severe infections, septicemia, endocarditis, meningitis. Prophylaxis in patients w/ reduced resistance & surgical prophylaxis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Uncomplicated infections 1 g 12 hrly IV/IM. Moderate to severe infections 1-2 g 8-12 hrly IM/IV. Severe infections 2-3 g 6-8 hrly IV. Uncomplicated gonorrhea 0.5-1 g IM as single dose. Max dose: 12 g/day. Surgical prophylaxis 1-2 g IM/IV single dose 30-60 min pre-op. Caesarean 1 g IV at clamping of umbilical cord followed by 1 g IM/IV 6 & 12 hr after 1st dose. Childn <12 yr & infant <50 kg 50-100 mg/kg/day IM/IV 6-12 hrly. Severe infection Up to 150-200 mg/kg/day. Neonate Max: 50 mg/kg/day. Impaired renal function Reduce daily dosage.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins.
Special Precautions
Penicillin-sensitive patients. Impaired renal function.
Adverse Reactions
Hypersensitivity reactions, thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, hemolytic anemia, GI effects.
