Indications/Uses
Treatment & prophylaxis of herpes genitalis & herpes simplex (including initial & recurrent infection), herpes zoster. Varicella.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Genital herpes infection Initially 200 mg 4 hrly while awake 5 times a day for 10 days. Recurrent infections Intermittent therapy: 200 mg 4 hrly while awake 5 times a day for 5 days. Chronic suppressive therapy: 400 mg bid, or 200 mg tid to 5 times daily. Herpes zoster 800 mg 4 hrly while awake 5 times a day for 7-10 days. Varicella 20 mg/kg, up to 800 mg/dose qid for 5 days. Initiate at the earliest sign of chickenpox. Herpes simplex Mucocutaneous (treatment): 200-400 mg 5 times a day for 10 days in immunocompromised patients; prophylaxis: 400 mg every 12 hr. Childn 2-12 yr Varicella 20 mg/kg, up to 800 mg/dose qid for 5 days. Treatment should be initiated at the earliest sign of chickenpox. Childn up to 2 yr 80 mg/kg/day. Max: 3,000 mg/m2/day.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: May be taken w/ meals to reduce GI discomfort.
