Concise Prescribing Info
Flupentixol 0.5 mg, melitracen 10 mg
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Usually 2 tab daily, morning & noon. In severe cases, the morning dose may be increased to 2 tab. Max: 4 tab daily. Elderly >65 yr 1 tab in the morning. May be increased to 2 tab daily in the morning & at noon. Maintenance dose: 1 tab in the morning.
May be taken with or without food.
Hypersensitivity. Circulatory collapse, depressed level of consciousness due to any cause, coma, blood disorders, phaeochromocytoma, recent MI, any degree of AV block or disorders of cardiac rhythm & coronary artery insufficiency. Patients receiving MAOIs w/in 14 days. Concomitant use w/ drugs causing QT prolongation.
Special Precautions
Patients w/ organic brain syndrome, convulsion, urinary retention, hyperthyroidism & advanced hepatic or CV disease. Excitable or overactive patients. W/draw gradually in patients treated w/ tranquilizers or neuroleptics w/ sedative effect. Monitor patients w/ depression prior to worsening of mental illness & possible suicidal behaviour. Discontinue treatment if emergency surgery is unavoidable. Patients receiving SSRIs. Identify risk factors for venous thromboembolism prior to & during therapy. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn & adolescent <18 yr. Elderly w/ risk factors for stroke.
Adverse Reactions
Insomnia, restlessness, agitation, somnolence, dizziness, tremor, dry mouth, constipation, accommodation disorder, fatigue, prolonged ECG QT.
Drug Interactions
May counteract the antihypertensive effects of guanethidine, betanidine, reserpine, clonidine & methyldopa. Increased risk of paralytic ileus, hyperpyrexia w/ TCAs. May enhance the effects of alcohol, barbiturates & other CNS depressants. May increase risk of QT prolongation & malignant arrhythmias w/ drugs known to increase plasma conc of flupentixol & cause electrolyte disturbances. Increased risk of neurotoxicity w/ lithium. May reduce the effect & increased risk of cardiac side effects of levodopa.
