Pharmacology: Pharmacodynamics: Following DIACERIC administration, it is rapidly metabolized to rhein, the active metabolite.
Rhein is an anthraquinone has been shown to inhibit the production of interleukin-1 beta which plays a role in inflammatory processes. They also exert chondroprotective effects in cultured articular cartilage and reduce severity of cartilage, and improved osteoarthritis symptoms in animal models.
Pharmacokinetics: After orally administration of DIACERIC, the peak concentration levels of rhein when concurrent intake of food delays the time to peak concentration about 2.4 hours. An elimination half-life of rhein is about 4.25 hours.
