Dextrose (hydrous), NaCl, Na lactate, CaCl2, MgCl2
Acute or chronic renal failure when nondialytic medical therapy is inadequate. Treatment of certain fluid electrolyte disturbances, & patients intoxicated w/ certain poisons.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Intermittent peritoneal dialysis (IPD) 8-14 hr/session; accomplished by periodic dialysis 3-5 times wkly. Continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) & continuous cyclic peritoneal dialysis (CCPD) 1.5-3 L of dialysis soln or 30-50 mL/kg body wt w/ max of 2 L. The soln remains in the cavity for dwell times of 4-8 hr during day & 8-12 hr overnight. The procedure is repeated 3-5 times/day, 6-7 days/wk.
Severe lactic acidosis, peritoneal membrane problem.
Special Precautions
Aseptic technique should be used throughout the procedure & at termination in order to reduce the possibility of infection. Peritonitis. Encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis. Pregnancy.
Adverse Reactions
Abdominal pain, bleeding, peritonitis, SC infection around a chronic peritoneal catheter, catheter blocking, difficulty in fluid removal & ileus. Electrolyte & fluid imbalance, hypovolemia, hypervolemia, hypotension, HTN, disequilibrium syndrome & muscle cramping.
