Na valproate
Indications/Uses
Epilepsy & generalized epilepsy eg, clonic tonic, tonic-clonic, absence, myoclonic or atonic seizure; Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, partial epilepsy. Treatment & prevention of mania associated w/ bipolar disorder.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Initially 10-15 mg/kg/day increasing at 2-3 days interval to reach optimum dosage in about 1 wk. Adult 20-30 mg/kg/day. Childn 30 mg/kg/day.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Acute or chronic liver disease.
Special Precautions
Drug-induced liver disease & pancreatitis. Pregnancy.
Adverse Reactions
Wt gain, nausea, vomiting, tremor, hair loss, liver dysfunction.
Drug Interactions
Potential effects of MAOIs, clonazepam, lamotrigine.
