Clindamycin HCl
Indications/Uses
Aerobic & anaerobic, Strep (except enterococci), Staph, Bacteroides sp. & Actinomyces infections. Infective endocarditis prophylaxis for surgery or dental procedures in high-risk patients w/ penicillin allergy. Pneumocystis pneumonia caused by Pneumocystis carinii. STD (eg, bacterial vaginosis).
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Aerobic & anaerobic, Strep (except enterococci), Staph, Bacteroides sp. & Actinomyces infections 150-450 mg every 6-8 hr (Max: 1.8 g/day). Infective endocarditis prophylaxis w/ penicillin allergy 600 mg 1 hr before surgery (Max: 1.8 g/day). Pneumocystis pneumonia 300-450 mg qid w/ primaquine. STD (eg, bacterial vaginosis) 300 mg bid for 7 days. Childn Infective endocarditis prophylaxis 20 mg/kg 1 hr before surgery.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: Swallow whole w/ a full glass of water & in an upright position.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Pseudomembranous colitis. Hepatic impairment.
Special Precautions
Hypersensitivity is contraindicated. Pseudomembranous colitis; GI disease (eg, colitis, chronic diarrhea). Acute hepatic failure, liver & renal disease.
Adverse Reactions
Diarrhea, abdominal pain. Hypotension; rash, pruritus, Stevens-Johnson syndrome; pseudomembranous colitis, nausea, vomiting; fungi overgrowth, hypersensitivity reaction.
Drug Interactions
Prolong neuromuscular blocking action of tubocurarine & pancuronium.
