Gabapentin
Indications/Uses
Epilepsy & treatment of neuropathic pain.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Epilepsy Adult & childn >12 yr 900-3,600 mg/day. May be initiated w/ 300 mg tid on day 1 or w/ 3 days titration by giving 300 mg once daily on day 1, 300 mg bid day two, 300 mg tid day 3. Max: 3,600 mg/day in 3 divided doses. Do not exceed 12 hr between dose in tid schedule. Childn 5-12 yr 25-35 mg/kg/day, 3 to <5 yr 40 mg/kg/day. Max interval between dose: 12 hr, 3-12 yr Initially, day one 10-15 mg/kg/day, day two 20 mg/kg/day, day three 30 mg/kg/day. To be given in 3 divided doses. Neuropathic Pain Adult ≥18 yr Initially 900 mg/day in 3 divided doses or w/ 3 days titration: Day one 300 mg once daily, day two 300 mg bid, day three 300 mg tid. Max: 3,600 mg/day.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Pregnancy & lactation.
Special Precautions
Renal impairment, haemodialysis, absence seizure. Gradual discontinuation (over 1 wk) &/or addition or substitution of alternative therapy. May impair ability to drive or operate machinery. Pregnancy & lactation. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Somnolence, dizziness, ataxia, tremor, headache, nystagmus, fatigue, diplopia, amblyopia, nausea, vomiting, convulsion, wt gain, pharyngitis, bronchitis, viral infection, emotion lability, dyspepsia.
Drug Interactions
Antacid, antihistamine.
