Indications/Uses
As monotherapy in the treatment of partial seizures w/ & w/o secondary generalization in adult & childn >12 yr. As adjunctive therapy in the treatment of partial seizures w/ & w/o secondary generalization in adult & childn ≥3 yr. Treatment of neuropathic pain in adult ≥18 yr.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Epilepsy Adult & childn >12 yr 900-3,600 mg/day. May be initiated w/ 300 mg tid on day 1 or w/ 3-day titration: 300 mg once daily (day 1), 300 mg bid (day 2), 300 mg tid (day 3). Max: 3,600 mg in 3 equally divided doses. Do not exceed 12 hr between doses in tid schedule. Childn 3-12 yr Initially 10-15 mg/kg/day in 3 equally divided doses. Effective dose: Childn ≥5 yr 25-35 mg/kg/day in 3 equally divided doses, 3-5 yr 40 mg/kg/day tid. Neuropathic pain Adult Initially 900 mg/day in 3 equally divided doses. May be initiated w/ 300 mg tid on day 1 or w/ 3-day titration: 300 mg once daily (day 1), 300 mg bid (day 2), 300 mg tid (day 3). Max: 3,600 mg/day.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity.
Special Precautions
Hepatic & renal impairment. Abrupt w/drawal may precipitate status epilepticus. Not for treatment of absence seizures. Hematologic disorders. May affect ability to drive or operate machinery. Pregnancy & lactation
Adverse Reactions
Asthenia, malaise, facial edema; HTN; flatulence, anorexia, gingivitis; purpura; arthralgia; vertigo, hyperkinesia, increased or decreased or absent reflexes; paresthesia, anxiety, hostility; pneumonia; UTI; visual disturbance; dizziness, ataxia, somnolence, nystagmus; abdominal pain, accidental injury; back pain, flu syndrome, headache, infection, pain; constipation, diarrhea, dry mouth, dyspepsia, flatulence, nausea, vomiting; peripheral edema, wt gain; abnormal gait, amnesia, ataxia, confusion, hypesthesia, abnormal thinking, tremor, vertigo; dyspnea, pharyngitis; rash; amblyopia.
Drug Interactions
Reduced bioavailability w/ Al- & Mg-containing antacids.
