Indications/Uses
DM in patients who require insulin. Gestational DM.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to insulin. Hypoglycemia.
Special Precautions
Monitor glucose conc in serum & urine, HbA1c & fructosamine conc in blood during treatment. The need for insulin may be altered by high fever, severe infection, emotional stress, GI disorders, pituitary, adrenal or thyroid gland disorders. Patients w/ kidney failure & DM due to pancreas diseases or DM that coexist w/ Addison's disease. Insulin resistance may occur w/ long-term use. May impair ability to drive or operate machinery. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia, ketoacidosis.
Drug Interactions
Increased action w/ β-blockers, chloroquine, ACE inhibitors, MAOIs, methyldopa, clonidine, pentamidine, salicylates, anabolic steroids, cyclophosphamide, sulphonamide antibiotics, tetracyclines, antibacterial quinolones & ethyl alcohol. Reduced action w/ diltiazem, dobutamine, estrogens, phenothiazine, phenytoin, thyroid hormones, heparin, calcitonin, corticosteroids, antiviral drugs applied in HIV infections, niacin & diuretic thiazides.
