Azathioprine
Indications/Uses
Immunosuppressant to facilitate survival in organ & tissue transplants. SLE, RA, chronic active hepatitis, acquired hemolytic anemia, polymyositis & severe autoimmune skin disorders.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Transplantation Loading dose: 3-5 mg/kg/day as single dose beginning on the day of transplant. Maintenance: 1-3 mg/kg/day. Cessation of therapy carries a high risk of rejection. Chronic active hepatitis 1-1.5 mg/kg/day. Other conditions listed in Indications 2-2.5 mg/kg/day.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Pregnancy & lactation.
Special Precautions
Perform CBC regularly. W/draw gradually & under close medical supervision. Severe renal or hepatic impairment. Avoid undue exposure to sun.
Adverse Reactions
Mild leucopenia, thrombocytopenia, rarely, anemia. Enzyme changes characteristic of hepatocellular necrosis & cholestasis, drug fever, skin rash, myalgia & arthralgia. Nausea, pancreatitis & hypersensitivity-type interstitial pneumonitis. Bone marrow depression.
